1. What did you do this past week?

This past week I continued to work on Life. I also had my final video interview with Amazon, which hopefully went well. I learned more about the way inheritance works in C++, which cleared up some of the misconceptions I had when working with abstract classes in Life. I’m also attending my cousin’s wedding this weekend. I finished up homework 10 for Algorithms on Wednesday and did the weekly learning exercises for Chemistry.

2. What’s in your way?

Flying to Atlanta for my cousin’s wedding is causing some issues for me with regards to my work. I still need to finish the UML diagrams and tests for Life, but working remotely is difficult when I’m forced to use the hotel or airport Wi-Fi.

3. What will you do next week?

Next week, I’ll be back in Austin by late Sunday night. I’ll be going to classes and finishing up Life and my algorithms homework. I’ll be going to Houston to spend the Thanksgiving break with my family after I’ve finished all my work. After Thanksgiving, I’ll be studying for a Chemistry exam the following Tuesday. I’ll also try to review all the HackerRanks that we’ve done in class during my free time.

4. What were your experiences of method overriding, pure virtual methods, and clone()? (this question will vary, week to week)

The lectures this week were very enlightening on the way that overloading works in C++. I’ll have to remember to use the overload method when I’m working with child classes because Professor Downing’s example of a possible runtime error sounds quite unfun to debug. I’ll admit I’m still confused as to why C++ does not explicitly label abstract methods with a keyboard, but its probably irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Furthermore, the clone() method was important for fixing a bug that took my partner and me a while to track down.

5. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip of the week is to not relax too much during Thanksgiving break. Enjoy the day itself and eat good food, but the end of the semester is rapidly approaching. We only have two weeks before finals begin, and allowing yourself to fall into a relaxed state of mind won’t be good. It’s unfortunate that Thanksgiving is so close to Winter Break, but it is what is.
