CS371P Fall 2019: Week 3

What did you do this past week?
This past week I set up Docker and worked on coursework for my other classes. I had more difficulties setting up Docker than I had first expected, but I eventually got everything functional. I didn’t manage to spend as much time on Collatz as I’d like, but I’ll be finishing it up on Sunday. I also attended Unity 2019, which was a fantastic show put on by several different Asian organizations on campus. I’d recommend attending next year to anyone who hasn’t been.
What’s in your way?
Right now, I am mostly having issues managing the different commitments I have. It’s a busy week for recruiting, so trying to balance that with my homework commitments is tough.
What will you do next week?
Next week, I have a quiz in one of my classes, as well as a Chemistry test on Tuesday night, so I’ll be busy studying for those. There’s also Collatz itself due, but I should have that done ahead of time. I’ll also be attending the CNS Career Fair on Thursday, so I need to update my resume a bit to prepare for that. Finally, I’ll be flying out to Chicago to attending JPMC’s Code for Good hackathon immediately after the fair, so I’m excited about that.
What was your experience in learning about Google Test, gcov, exceptions, pointers, and references? (this question will vary, week to week)
I haven’t worked with Google Test and gcov before, so that was an enlightening lecture. I can already think of several scenarios where being able to know exactly what lines are covered by your testing would have been extremely useful. As far as exceptions, pointers, and references go, I already had a fairly solid handle on those. Taking Operating Systems with Professor Gheith made understanding memory very important. Exceptions are something that make my life easier, as a programmer, so they were something that I’ve known about for a while as well.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My tip of the week would be the UT CNS Handshake. Fill out your profile on there, and look for opportunities. Additionally, recruiters tend to reach out quite often in preparation for the career fair.
