  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I spent several days working on the IDB project with my team. I also spent 3 days working on my Natural Language Processing project, which was pretty rough. Chasing down tiny off by one errors in neural networking code is quite time intensive, yet these errors are so impactful to the result that it needs to be done.
  2. What’s in your way?
Right now, there’s nothing in my way. I’ve accomplished most of the work that needs to be done urgently. I’ll have a new wave of assignments coming in soon, but for now I can take a break.
  3. What will you do next week?
Next week, I’ll be working on another assignment for my NLP class. This one shouldn’t require any coding, so hopefully it won’t be as intensive as this last project was. I’ll also take the time to work with some members of my team on cleaning up our IDB codebase. Lastly, I need to get together with my Ethics team and get some work in on our presentations.
  4. If you read it, what did you think of The Dependency Inversion Principle?
I think it builds on the last few papers we’ve been reading here on Perusall, but I don’t believe it was particularly groundbreaking. Overall I’d just call it a fairly dry read.
  5. What was your experience of relational algebra in Python? (this question will vary, week to week)
Relational algebra makes sense to me, generally, but I’m glad we had the refresher this week before we head on into SQL soon. Although some of the finer details were difficult to pick up, I feel confident in my grasp of the topic now.
  6. What made you happy this week?
This week I got back into Space Engineers with a friend of mine, which was a nice change of pace from the games I’ve been playing. I’m also looking forward to the next Formula 1 race this coming weekend — I’ll be getting up early for that.
  7. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My pick of the week is the Prettier extension, specifically regarding its use with Javascript. Prettier is a code formatter that will automatically edit your files on save, assuming that you set up its configuration file once and enable that setting in your code editor of choice. It’s quite handy for taking very wordy code (as often happens with Javascript) and breaking it down line by line into a format that is much more easily readable.
